The number 1 thing that keeps any hotel or facilities manager awake at night is fire safety.

Public buildings, such as hotels need to have a proper fire safety program in place which should include:

  • Inspection
  • Testing
  • Maintenance

The following tips will help you with fire safety compliance.

REGULAR INSPECTION OF FIRE SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS

In most emergencies, the cause is usually attributed to neglect or poor maintenance of equipment or systems - alarms that have been silenced or smoke detectors that are clogged with dirt.

Inspections are an easy, cost-effective, and practical step towards reducing the fire risks in your building. As well as inspecting fire extinguishers and alarms, the following should also be inspected periodically:

  • Electrical equipment - all it takes is a faulty wire to cause serious damage to the building and harm to visitors and staff.
  • Heating equipment - the system should be cleaned, checked for leaks, and  the combustion tested.
  • Sprinkler system - a sprinkler that is not designed, installed, or maintained properly can cause a fire to spread.

TEST FIRE SAFETY EXIT SIGNS

When a fire breaks out there is often chaos and confusion as smoke obscures the vision and makes it difficult to identify one’s surroundings. Illuminated exit signs are essential and should be tested regularly to ensure that the emergency power works when there is no electricity.

ESTABLISH A CLEAR FIRE SAFETY EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN AND COMMUNICATE IT TO STAFF

Management needs to provide all members of staff an emergency action plan to ensure they are well aware of fire emergency procedures and exit routes. The plan should also include specific actions members of staff should take to be sure of their own and the guests safety, particularly those in compromised situations.

Quarterly staff fire drills need to also be included in the emergency action plan. This drill allows staff to practice evacuation in the event of a fire, but also shows if there is anything that needs to be improved so the process is flawless and no one is injured.

All public areas need to be fitted out with an evacuation room sign to indicate to guests where to go in the event of a fire.

The emergency action plan needs to be regularly reviewed by management and communicated to staff, especially if the plan has evolved or if a member of staff’s responsibilities has changed.
